Addressing pollution and waste from and by tourism and communities for a clean and healthy environment

Waste is a global issue, with increasing volumes of waste being generated as our human population increases. The impact of waste on the environment is significant in various ways, and only a fraction of it is being treated to minimise its impact. The tourism industry is simultaneously a victim and a villain of plastic pollution: people travel to experience nature’s beauty, while at the same time the tourism industry is making significant contributions to its deterioration.

Clean-up Campaigns

Sustainable waste management is a challenge for remote tourist accommodations and villages, which is common in Namibia. Instead, much of the waste ends up being burned, causing air pollution. Even when it is transported over long distances and being treated, it leads to emissions which directly adds to global warming. Also, many people are not aware of the negative impact of waste, if not lack the opportunities and facilities to reduce and recycle plastic.

TOSCO, partnering with EcoAwards, HAN (Hospitality Association of Namibia), RNF (Recycle Namibia Form) and Recycle Lab, organises clean-up campaigns whereby tourism stakeholders and conservancy members join to clean up the natural environment. During our clean-up campaigns we organise workshops to raise awareness among participants on the effects of waste on the natural environment, as well as on waste management practices. We are determined to find sustainable waste management solutions in rural areas.

Reusable water bottles
Besides removing existing litter from the environment, we want to help reduce the hundreds of plastic bottles produced for the tourism industry that already end up in landfills or even in the world’s oceans. Drinking enough water is important, especially when traveling through a hot, dry country like Namibia. However, in peak years of tourism more than 50 million plastic water bottles were being used by tourists in Namibia, of which less than 20% was recycled. We have introduced our reusable water bottles for travellers, that can be refilled with tap water and borehole water, which is drinkable almost everywhere in Namibia. All profit directly supports our conservation projects.
